OSA SEEKS DIRECTORS

Open Space Arts is a 25-seat storefront theater in Uptown Chicago producing bold, intimate LGBTQ+ work. We create small-cast plays and tight 90-minute experiences that invite audiences into emotionally immediate, actor-driven worlds.

Recent productions include DORIAN, MY LIFE AS A COWBOY, GANGSTA BABY, SCANDALOUS BOY, IT’S BEEN TEN YEARS SINCE THEY ALL DIED, MR. PARKER, MERCY KILLING, and LIGHT SWITCH.

We are looking for directors who want to be in the room, in process, building something urgent and alive.

FULL DIRECTING ASSIGNMENTS

We have plays on file that we are actively interested in producing and are seeking experienced directors for full productions.

We are especially drawn to directors who:

  • Lead strong, actor-centered rehearsal rooms
  • Embrace the constraints — and power — of an intimate storefront
  • Know how to shape a focused, dynamic 90-minute evening
  • Are passionate about contemporary LGBTQ+ storytelling

HAVE A PROJECT?

If there’s a play you believe in and think belongs at Open Space Arts, bring it.

We are open to proposals for:

  • Chicago premieres
  • American premieres
  • World premieres

Projects must align with our mission and work in a small-cast, intimate format.

If you’ve been waiting for the right home for a script, this may be it.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS

We are also seeking Assistant Directors.

These positions are ideal for early-career directors who want hands-on experience inside a working production. Assistant Directors are active participants in the rehearsal process and gain insight into artistic leadership, collaboration, and the logistics of producing in a storefront environment.

INTERNSHIPS at OSA

Open Space Arts is a working Chicago storefront company producing bold queer theater and curating the Queer Expression Film Series.

If you want to see how art actually gets made — and help make it — we offer hands-on internships in two focused tracks: Film Festival & Curation and Theater Production & Administration. This is not shadowing. This is participation.

FILM FESTIVAL & CURATION TRACK

Work with our Queer Expression Film Series and streaming showcases.

Interns assist with:

  • Film research and selection
  • Communication with filmmakers and distributors
  • Festival logistics and screening coordination
  • Marketing and audience outreach

Open Space Arts does not produce our own films. This track focuses on film exhibition, curation, and independent queer cinema — learning how films reach audiences and how festivals operate.

THEATER PRODUCTION & ADMINISTRATION TRACK

Step inside the engine of a storefront theater.

Interns may work in:

  • Production management and stage management support
  • Directing and dramaturgical assistance
  • Marketing and publicity
  • Development and fundraising
  • Front-of-house and audience services
  • Nonprofit arts administration

You’ll gain insight into both the artistic and administrative sides of producing live theater.

WHAT YOU’LL GAIN

  • Real responsibility in a working company
  • Direct mentorship from OSA leadership
  • Portfolio-building experience
  • Complimentary tickets to productions and screenings
  • Networking within Chicago’s theater and film community
  • College credit (when available through your institution)
  •

Open Space Arts is committed to building an inclusive artistic community and strongly encourages applicants from underrepresented backgrounds.

Flexible scheduling available. Some hybrid opportunities depending on the season.
