OPEN SPACE ARTS ANNOUNCES “BEST OF THE FEST – SUMMER 2026” STREAMING PROGRAM FEATURING INTERNATIONAL LGBTQ+ FILMS FROM THE QUEER EXPRESSION FILM FESTIVAL
CHICAGO — Open Space Arts (OSA) proudly announces the SUMMER 2026 edition of its BEST OF THE FEST streaming series, showcasing a curated selection of 14 standout films from 6 countries featured in the QUEER EXPRESSION FILM FESTIVAL, a program of Open Space Arts.
Comiong soon on OpenSpaceArts.org, the series highlights bold, inventive, and deeply personal LGBTQ+ storytelling from around the globe — including a sci-fi odyssey, a moving portrait of an undocumented family member facing an impossible goodbye, meditations on fatherhood, and many other unexpected and inventive approaches to queer storytelling. The streaming festival runs from May 27 through June 23.
The QUEER EXPRESSION FILM FESTIVAL amplifies bold, risk-taking LGBTQ+ voices from around the world, championing films that challenge convention, spark conversation, and reflect the full complexity of queer lives.
This year’s program also marks a notable first for the festival: director Moitri Ghosh is represented with two films in a single program — ASHA and BY DESIGN — offering a compelling look at her distinct voice and thematic focus on identity, family, and choice.
The QUEER EXPRESSION FILM FESTIVAL is composed of quarterly BEST OF THE FEST streaming programs, each highlighting exceptional work from OSA’s ongoing film programming. This SUMMER 2026 edition includes films from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, South Korea, Spain, and the United States, reflecting a wide range of cultural perspectives and storytelling styles across the international queer community.
Divided into three programs — PROGRAM A (SHORTS), PROGRAM B (MID-LENGTH FILMS), and PROGRAM C (MID-LENGTH FILMS) — the series brings together emerging and established filmmakers exploring identity, family, love, resilience, and transformation.
“These films represent a wide spectrum of queer experience — intimate, political, joyful, and provocative,” said David Zak, Director of Open Space Arts. “BEST OF THE FEST brings together voices from across the world, each offering a unique perspective on what it means to live authentically.”
In addition to its streaming programs, Open Space Arts continues its in-person QUEER EXPRESSION film series at FACETS (1517 W Fullerton Ave, Lincoln Park). Upcoming screenings include ON THE SEA on April 27 and MAS PALOMAS on June 1, offering audiences the opportunity to experience international queer cinema in a shared theatrical setting.

The Queer Expression Film Fest (QE Film Fest) is Open Space Arts’ year-round film initiative celebrating bold, intimate, and adventurous queer cinema from around the world. Through curated screenings, Chicago premieres, filmmaker conversations, and special events, QE Film Fest creates space for stories that expand how queer lives, identities, and experiences are represented on screen.
Our programming highlights independent and international queer films—work that is personal, daring, playful, political, and emotionally resonant—and brings them into conversation with engaged Chicago audiences. We regularly partner with Facets Film Forum to present new queer feature films, often as Chicago premieres, alongside curated short- and mid-length programs.
The mission of the Queer Expression Film Fest is to amplify queer storytelling in all its complexity while fostering meaningful connections between filmmakers and audiences. We champion new and under-seen work, support independent artists, and celebrate queer expression in all its forms.
The Queer Expression Film Fest accepts submissions in multiple categories, including competitive programs and special in-person screenings.
We welcome short, mid-length, and feature-length queer films for consideration in our Best of the Fest programs. Selected films may be presented as curated theatrical screenings, streaming programs, or both.
General Run Times
We are also seeking feature-length queer films (60+ minutes) for one-night-only, in-person screenings at Facets Film Forum. These screenings serve as Chicago premieres and may include filmmaker Q&As or post-screening discussions. There is no submission deadline for feature films being considered for live, in-person screenings at Facets Film Forum.
What does “Chicago premiere” mean?
A Chicago premiere means the film has not previously screened publicly in the Chicago area, including prior festival, theatrical, or museum screenings.

QUEER EXPRESSION Film Fest is seeking volunteer screeners to join our film-selection team and help review queer films from around the world.
We’re looking for film lovers, programmers, artists, educators, critics, and engaged community members who enjoy watching independent cinema and supporting LGBTQIA+ filmmakers. Volunteer screeners will view a small number of submitted films and provide ratings and brief feedback based on established criteria such as storytelling, craft, originality, and representation.
Please note: To ensure fairness and avoid conflicts of interest, volunteer film screeners may not submit their own films to the festival during the year they serve as screeners.
